Emanuar says the mod includes 80 moons to collect. The project incorporates Cappy as part of Mario’s powers, letting him assume direct control of Goombas, Bullet Bills, Pokios, and more. Super Mario Odyssey 64 is another impressive mod from the creator. Seriously.Prolific Super Mario 64 modder Kaze Emanuar released a new project this weekend, a “demake” of Nintendo Switch game Super Mario Odyssey, lovingly recreated in Nintendo 64 style. Surely someone at some point suggested the idea to put at least one painting level in there. but then not capitalize on the nostalgia factor. I have no idea how the dev team came up with the genius idea to put the Mushroom Kingdom as a post-game level. This is what should have happened with the level. There are a fuckton of moons to get here, and athletic courses and new areas. The level is just different enough to not waste that nostalgia while giving you the incredible desire to explore what's new. It looks and sounds just like it did in your childhood and you are submerged in nostalgia. you are in the Bob-omb Battlefield complete with the music. You enter the leftmost door and you see the painting with a bob-omb on it, just like 20 years ago. When you enter the castle, you notice there are some doors you can enter. The canon is accessible and you can shoot yourself on the castle's roof.

You can drain the water just like you could then (and can now). There are some moons you can get here, including a (non-functioning) 1-up that pops when you climb that one tree. It's a little bigger and different, but the topography is similar enough to induce you with nostalgia and make you super fucking excited. The outside of the castle is very similar to how it was originally. You arrive in the Mushroom Kingdom by the exact same pipe-exiting animation. All the moons you can get in this level are outside the castle. But there's nothing to do there except get moons from Toadette for having complete challenges and getting another from staring at the ceiling. Yeah, the inside of the castle is mostly the same at least, the lobby is, and it's the only accessible area. The only thing that does is the under-the-bridge section that has the same jingle when you drain the water. The outside of the castle doesn't look anything like the outside of the castle in SM64.

That feeling that you get right after grabbing your first moon and hearing the same star-grabbing tune from SM64 fades out very quickly when you realize how they wasted that opportunity.įor nostalgia to work in such a scenario, the level would have had to be extremely similar to its original version. It's clear when visiting the Mushroom Kingdom in Super Mario Odyssey that the developers wanted to give players this big nostalgia moment of "oh SHIT! It's the same as it was in Super Mario 64!" But it doesn't work.
